A bunch of my friends just gratuated (see a list of them at ausserordentlich2010.de ) and are now starting out as photographers, and as there are so many talented photographers out there (also here in Germany) self promotion is an important thing to do and to pay a lot of attention to. I found the following self-promo by us-american photographer Casey Templeton and it shows very well that mailings still can work if they come with an extraordinary idea and a good design. I personally have the feeling (but I’m only guessing) that email promo isn’t very efficient anymore, because photo editors, art buyers, gallerists etc. probably receive loads of these emails from random people, but they don’t have the time to read and see everything and are maybe even annoyed by the amount of emails they receive.

Templeton put together a “lunch box” with various items, see the video from his blog here:

I’m wondering what kind of self-promo german photographers send out. Any examples available? Would love to get some feedback from you!

I don’t know if you all have seen the Blog/book “No plastic sleeves”, but there you can also find some inspirations when it comes to self promotion, designing portfolios etc.

The photographic dictionary is a project by Michelle Kanderson that was edited very well. It’s a pleasure to look at as it surprises the viewer with unconventional photographic interpretations of the given words from A to Z.

Via Conscientious I found the work of Roderick Henderson. What raised my attention is mainly that his work is / seems so authentic. There is nothing staged in his photographs, or if one says that every photograph is staged than it is on a very reduced level with Hendersons work. For me it was important to read the About text on his website to get a better approach to his work. There he almost tells his whole biography which is very much connected with his photographs as he always documented his and his families life and the people around them.

On his website one can see that he shows the prints veery large (roughly 3 x 4 meters large). I’m sure they have a great impact coming that large, but I’m also more and more sceptical about too large prints – how wonderful can a small (10*16 inches or so), nicely framed photograph be! Art photo world, let’s get smaller again!

I think i also love very much the tonality and colors of his work, especially of the Transvoid and Island series.

I like this guy.

Fellow student Joscha Bruckert has published the 4th issue of Romka magazine. He’s also asking for a small donation as his online photography magazine has been downloaded sooo often that it exceeded his server limits by far (I know the numbers….).

I like the magazine because a larger part of photography I’m interested in is not “amateur” photography and further more is not emotional, “subjective” photography. But with Joscha’s project Romka magazine, I like very much that it is very personal and also coming with some text about the personal relation to the picture and the story behind it.

I like these very much (the following two screenshots come one after another in the pdf ):

Also this one is nice

But Joscha, come on, don’t make fun of the boy next to you,ok?

There is noch such thing as  bad photograph..For his new proejct, fellow student Joscha Bruckert needs your shitty photographs. Send him some!

In a personal project, Berlin/Vienna based portrait/travel/editorial photographer Peter Rigaud takes a portrait of somebody and then asks that person to name another person Rigaud should photograph, what he does afterwards, and so on and so on. The subjects are also asked to write some lines about why Rigaud should photograph the next person, what is so special about them. On his website, you can see some of these texts, unfortunately very small and hard to read – would like to see this project as a book or magazine!

You find these photographs when you click on Projects>Project 1, but also check out the other stuff, some of his work is quite good I think.
