Do you read me?
May 7, 2009
For all magazine nerds this seems to be a good resource and shop (based in Berlin)
Malick Sidibe shot a fashion editorial for the New York Times Style magazine. During the whole shoot, he exposed not more than 22 frames for 9 pages. 2-3 pictures per subject. Isn’t that a sign for us who shoot digital like crazy?
Read the backstory plus interview here.
Another interview on lensculture.
US-Esquire with new covers
April 29, 2009
Last year, us-american Esquire magazine re-designed their covers with the typography and headlines mostly behind the cover portraits which creates kind of a 3-d effect. For the may 2009 issue, they came up with a new idea and took 3 of Martin Schoeller’s head shots and combinded them. See a video here.
What I like here is that there is still some magazines that try to come up with something new to make magazines again more interesting. FYI, on esquire.com you also find all the covers sine 1933 !
photographers against Jalag – we need to protest!
April 20, 2009
The german publisher Jahreszeitenverlag (JALAG) with magazines such as “Petra, Für Sie, Merian” now forces photographers to sign contracts that give all rights of all photo material of assigned JALAG shoots to the JALAG-syndication. So for everybody who signs this contract and keeps working for JALAG publications, he won’t have the possibility to re-sell his material later – which means that this important channel of distributing and selling pictures will be closed in the future…IF WE DON’T PROTEST AGAINST IT!
So all the photographers and students out there, click the FREELENS (a german photographers union) protest blog and sign your name there! This movement against stealing photographers rights seems to become hugh now, and it should even be bigger as the disussion is about our economic future!
Joscha Bruckert’s Romka Magazine
April 17, 2009
By chanche I found Joscha Bruckert’s project “Romka magazine“. It’s a magazine that can be downloaded as a PDF, No. 2 is out now for a while I guess. I’ve seen interesting stuff and I like the concept of bringing young photography from all over the world together. It’s only few images per photographer, but enough to drag your attention and google them and get some new input.
I always love when other young photographers do something new and fresh, I love it when fellow students from the not so supertrendy city of DORTMUND show their passion and do interesting projects. Seems as if the feedback to Romka magazine is quiet well – thank you, Joscha, may Romka grow!

German Vanity Fair discontinued – not enough ads sold
February 18, 2009
German Vanity Fair magazine that just started 2 years ago will be discontinued, as publisher Conde Nast says today. It’s german competitor Park Avenue was closed 2 months ago, as well as a bunch of other magazines, mostly because companies don’t advertise anymore due to the financial crisis. I wasn’t a big fan of these two magazines, but at least they tried something that is still rare in Germany: to put some money and efforts in more interesting editorial / portrait photography, even if one could say that their photography style was quite “superficial” sometimes.
Current foam magazine # 16 – the talent issue
December 3, 2008

SPD / PUB 43
November 29, 2008
The american Society of publishing designers, SPD, chooses every year the best magazines – I love to check their galleries especially as most german ediorial design and photography isn’t that great…
