Feldstaerke in Los Angeles with Thom Andersen
October 14, 2009
Greetings from Los Angeles!
As some of you know I’ll spend some time in the states and i’m right now for one week participating in a great international workshop (FELDSTAERKE) with students from Germany, Paris and from CalArts University Los Angeles.
As an introduction to the extremely big Los Angeles area, we saw an essay film by Thom Andersen that is called “Los Angeles plays itself“. Andersen takes literally almost all the movies that were shot in LA and uses their scenes to show the city. The film took about 3 hrs, but these youtube clips give you a nice idea of it. Cool piece, but in my opinion just too long. Maybe one has to see it in 2 or 3 parts.
Juergen Teller Lecture Video / WTJ Blog
September 23, 2009
Especially when you are interested in editorial and portrait photography, Andrew Hetherington’s Blog WTJ (whatsthejackanory.com) gives good and amusing insights, also with a focus on what’s going in in NYC. Andrew went to a lecture with Juergen Teller and filmed it – it’s quite long but also very interesting. I especially like the moment Teller says that when he started out, a magazin (don’t remeber if he said FACE or ID) paid him 100 £ per page, and to reduce costs, he bought a 35 mm film (that’s what he still shoots) with only 12 exposures which forced him to work “very precise”.This guy really knows what he wants.
dju-Fotografentag „Grenzüberschreitungen“
June 19, 2009
Hey there!
The last weeks where quite busy, so there wasn’t enough time and energy to research and post new stuff. Nevertheless, i’m back with I guess some interesting material. But first of all, for those of you that are based in Germany, this photography conference in Hannover might be interesting:
dju-Fotografentag 09
„Grenzüberschreitungen“
am 10. Oktober 2009 ,
von 10 – 17:00 Uhr,
in der Fachhochschule Hannover, Bereich Design und Medien
Expo Plaza 2 in Hannover.
Last week I visited the “Lumix Festival For Young Photojournalism” in Hannover. It was just incredible what the students of the FH Hannover, together w their professor Mr. Nobel and some sponsors created there:
Not less than 60 series (1400 photographs or so) of young photographers (entries came from all over the world) where shown at the former “Expo” fair area. Of course, there where some not so interesting series, some low-quality digital stuff and boring topics, but in general, this festival is worth visiting it. There were also some nice lectures, for example from magnum photographer Thomas Hoepker.
My favourite series is “Disappearing Circus” from Rafal Milach, a young polish photographer who photographed retired circus artists.

Dietmar Henneka on the advertising business
June 18, 2008

Thorsten told me about a video where advertising (mostly cars) photographer Dietmar Henneka talks about his job and the relation to the ADs and his clients.
Though this lecture was already held in 1999, it’s still interesting too see and gives an intense insight into the “disaster of being an advertising photographer” in Germany
Long video, but worth watching every single minute (i love the part where he shows to the client how telelens and wideangles lenses work…)
Of course there is a lot of polemic in his lecture, and for sure he exaggerates, but somebody like him who has been in the business for decades should somehow know, shouldn’t he?
Unfortunately, the video is in german only.
See it here .
